About World Extreme Weather Monitor

Who runs World Extreme Weather Monitor, what it counts and how to reach us.

What This Site Is

World Extreme Weather Monitor keeps a permanent ledger of weather records. Every day it compares new station observations with each station's history and lists each daily, monthly and all-time record that was set or tied, ranked by a significance score that we document in full. This build covers 42,764 stations in 181 countries.

Each page starts with the answer, lists key facts in short sentences, and shows the figures in charts and tables. Every number names its source and the date it describes. Temperatures are shown in both Celsius and Fahrenheit, and rainfall in both millimetres and inches.

How It Works

A data pipeline downloads NOAA GHCN-Daily observations, applies fixed rules for which stations qualify and what counts as a record, keeps a log of every revision, and rebuilds the site. The methodology explains the rules and the sources page lists every dataset and its licence.

The records are our own computation and are not official national climate records. Where the site shows an official world record, it links to the World Meteorological Organization archive.

The site is free to use. It may carry advertising in future; advertising never changes what the data says.
