Key Facts
The trend in annual rain is +1.0 percent per decade (95 percent interval +0.6 to +1.5), fitted to 74 years from 1951 to 2024.
Worldwide, the share of a year's rain that fell in its wettest five days fell from 13.1 to 12.9 percent between the 1960s and the 2020s at 4,430 stations.
Worldwide, the mean number of days with 25 mm (1.0 in) or more of rain per year rose from 6.01 to 6.87 between the 1960s and the 2020s.
Worldwide, the mean number of days with 50 mm (2.0 in) or more of rain per year rose from 1.20 to 1.44 between the 1960s and the 2020s.
Worldwide, the mean number of days with 100 mm (3.9 in) or more of rain per year rose from 0.13 to 0.16 between the 1960s and the 2020s.
Worldwide, the mean longest dry spell of the year, in days with less than 1 mm of rain in a row, fell from 35.2 to 34.2 days between the 1960s and the 2020s, over the same 4,430 stations in every decade.

How to Read This Page
The first chart shows annual rain as a percent difference from each station's own 1961-1990 mean. Stations are averaged within 5 degree by 5 degree grid cells and the cells are weighted by the cosine of latitude, so a crowded region does not count more than a sparse one. Only stations with at least 50 complete years since 1951, at least 15 complete years in 1961-1990 and at least 10 in the latest 20 years are in this set. The trend is an ordinary least squares fit per decade, and its 95 percent interval allows for year to year persistence.
The other charts use fixed station sets: the same stations in every decade, with at least 6 complete years of rain data in each decade from the 1960s. The wettest five day share is the rain of the year's wettest five days divided by the year's total rain. Heavy rain days are days with 25 mm (1.0 in), 50 mm (2.0 in) or 100 mm (3.9 in) or more. A dry spell is a run of days with less than 1 mm (0.04 in) of rain, and the chart shows the mean longest one in a year. A year of rain data is complete with 329 or more days reporting.
Stations are not spread evenly: some regions have many and others few, so a continent or world figure describes the stations in the set and not every place. Every figure here describes what the station records show. It does not say why it changed.
This page has the world, 4 continents and 24 countries with data. Each scope has its own station sets, named in its charts.

The annual rain series uses stations with at least 50 complete years since 1951 and a 1961-1990 baseline. The decade charts use fixed sets of stations, the same in every decade from the 1960s. A dry day has less than 1 mm (0.04 in) of rain.
In Asia, annual rain at 282 stations is shown as a percent difference from each station's own 1961-1990 mean, for 67 years from 1951 to 2024.
The trend in annual rain is +0.4 percent per decade (95 percent interval -0.4 to +1.1), fitted to 67 years from 1951 to 2024. The interval includes zero, so the series does not separate a trend from year to year variation.

The annual rain series uses stations with at least 50 complete years since 1951 and a 1961-1990 baseline. The decade charts use fixed sets of stations, the same in every decade from the 1960s. A dry day has less than 1 mm (0.04 in) of rain.
In Oceania, annual rain at 1,917 stations is shown as a percent difference from each station's own 1961-1990 mean, for 75 years from 1951 to 2025.
The trend in annual rain is +0.9 percent per decade (95 percent interval -1.3 to +3.1), fitted to 75 years from 1951 to 2025. The interval includes zero, so the series does not separate a trend from year to year variation.
In Oceania, the share of a year's rain that fell in its wettest five days fell from 16.5 to 15.7 percent between the 1960s and the 2020s at 901 stations.
In Oceania, the mean number of days with 25 mm (1.0 in) or more of rain per year rose from 5.46 to 6.68 between the 1960s and the 2020s.
In Oceania, the mean number of days with 50 mm (2.0 in) or more of rain per year rose from 1.32 to 1.70 between the 1960s and the 2020s.
In Oceania, the mean number of days with 100 mm (3.9 in) or more of rain per year rose from 0.21 to 0.29 between the 1960s and the 2020s.
In Oceania, the mean longest dry spell of the year, in days with less than 1 mm of rain in a row, fell from 45.5 to 40.1 days between the 1960s and the 2020s, over the same 901 stations in every decade.
Annual rain against the 1961-1990 mean
Annual rain, percent difference from the mean
Annual rain in Oceania as a percent difference from each station's own 1961-1990 mean, for 1,917 stations with a long record, 1951 to 2025. Stations are averaged in 5 degree grid cells and the cells are weighted by the cosine of latitude.

Ordered by the change in mean days with 25 mm or more rain per year between a country's first and last decade in the file. The station count is for the annual rain series (n/a when that series is not shown for the country); heavy rain days use a fixed set of stations for each country.
